If the starter has an integral solenoid (like a GM starter), there shoul dbe one large lug for the main power from the battery and a much smaller terminal for the 12V actuation power form the "start" position of the ignition switch. The starter is grounded through the mounting bolts, so a separate ground wire is not needed.. Click on the illustration below and download the PDF wiring diagram of a typical Ford starting system. You'll see that the system consists of a fuse, ignition switch, starter relay, transmission range selector (neutral safety switch on for an automatic transmission) or a start inhibit switch for a manual transmission, and a ground control.
